The Future of Tech Hiring in a Pandemic World : Demand for Tech Talents

With the Covid-19 pandemic bringing in many restrictions and cease of operations in business sectors, companies have been forced to lay off their employees and adapt into remote working environments almost immediately. To resume business operations means to adopt digital transformation and bring their businesses online. While digitalisation is huge now and will continue to grow larger in the coming years, the market demand for tech talents has seen a steep increase.

Recently, we had the privilege to host a sharing session with Cathy from Nairenon Consultancy about the changes in the tech hiring landscape amidst the pandemic. One of the questions that we discussed together was “what are the areas of tech that companies are in demand for?” Here is a summary of it;

1. Cloud-based Technology

Essentially the cloud is in fact the Internet. In simple terms the ‘cloud’ is the ability to host a software platform or service from a remote location that can be freely accessed and used anywhere via Internet access. Cloud engineers are software developers who manage the infrastructure of the cloud, build and maintain software features and functions, databases and applications for cloud technologies while also providing security for cloud-based platforms and applications.

2. Connectivity - 5G

With 5G technology on the rise, it is projected to see increased productivity and new products and services being introduced and invented. 5G will create a highly competitive business environment across various industries. As a result, many newly qualified engineers, technicians and 5G-ready engineers could find themselves being in very high demand over the next few years.

3. Artificial Intelligence

AI tech engineers build AI models using machine learning algorithms and deep learning neural networks to draw business insights, which can be used to make business decisions that affect the entire organization. These engineers also create weak or strong AIs, depending on what goals they want to achieve. AI is and will be the future of our economy as many seek to employ their usage in their businesses.

4. Data Analytics

About 2.5 quintillion bytes of data are created every day—and that pace is only quickening. That explosion of data is driving the industry that leverages it; as organizations’ data collection grows in scope and sophistication, it’s inevitable that they’ll want to make use of that data, and Data Analysts are at the forefront of this trend. There are opportunities to apply data analysis skills across a wide range of industries such as telecommunications insurance, and advertising, followed by financial services, healthcare, technology, research and development, and operations.

5. Blockchain

Blockchain is a system of recording information in a way that makes it difficult or impossible to change, hack, or cheat the system. It was first combined with other innovative technologies to generate cryptocurrencies, beginning with Bitcoin, the first Blockchain-based cryptocurrency. Blockchain technology will be relevant for days As many companies adopt digital transformation, the need for securing safe, private, and reliable transactions to run businesses online.

6. Cybersecurity

Cyber security is the application of technologies, processes and controls to protect systems, networks, programs, devices and data from cyber attacks.As the economy slowly shifts online, cyber crimes and attacks will happen more frequently to steal not just digital assets, but also sensitive databases from companies. With that in mind, software engineers specialised in cybersecurity are heavily demanded to protect companies such as social media platforms from its vulnerabilities of exposing sensitive information that does severe damage to a company.

As technology continues to improve drastically, we find ourselves in the midst of a shortage of supply in tech talents. Forward School prioritises in nurturing the next generation of problem solving tech talents in these areas of demand.
