I have always been interested in Data Science. Data and analytics allows us to stop guessing and make better, informed decisions. So, I took the plunge and enrolled in Forward School to begin my Data Science journey.

A year ago, I had no programming experience. I had a Biomedical Science degree instead.

Today, I work at Pencil, an EdTech startup based in Silicon Valley as a full-time Data Scientist.

How did I get started in Data Science

From my early memories, I’ve always been interested in understanding data, particularly on how it could help eliminate guesswork and help us make better decisions.

Knowing the power of data (and fascinated!), I then wanted to use Data Science to solve real-world healthcare problems. One of them is the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

It was then I decided to pursue Data Science professionally.

So, I took the plunge and enrolled in Forward School to begin my Data Science journey.

Even though it was a remote program (due to the spike of Covid-19 cases), I enjoyed the whole learning process throughout the 4 months.

One of the highlights would be the friends and instructors that I’ve met during this course. With the help of the instructors (as seasoned Data Scientists themselves), I was able to transition into a data science role with ease.

How can you become a Data Scientist? Just get started

Just start somewhere, and start today!

Despite having no coding experience, I realized that it is most important to start somewhere, preferably with a topic you are interested in. For me, it was healthcare.

It definitely helps to start small and build on that foundation. Then, you’ll be on your way.
